Born in 1974, Janine Bean entered the art world as a museologist before co-founding janinebeangallery in Berlin with her husband in 2004. Two decades on, she curates a program that balances emerging voices and established names, staging thematic exhibitions, international collaborations, and art-fair appearances. Her mission is to foster long-term partnerships with artists, encouraging experimentation while connecting their work to collectors, institutions, scholars, and the wider public.
The call is open to photographers from around the world, both professional and amateur, over the age of 18.
Images submitted for the cover must be in JPG format, 1200 px on the longest side, and 72 dpi. Horizontal, vertical, or square formats are accepted, although images may be cropped to fit the final design.
Projects or portfolios intended for the magazine must include a maximum of 20 images, submitted in a single .ZIP or .RAR file. Optionally, you may include a short explanatory text about the project within the same file.
The selection process is completely impartial. All projects are presented to the jury anonymously, without names or references that could influence the decision.
Each submission will be evaluated based on four key criteria: Technical quality of the images, Emotional impact of the project, Overall composition and the author’s personal style.
Once the selection process is complete, we will contact the authors of the selected projects to request high-resolution files. We will also notify those who were not selected.
All participants will receive a digital copy of the magazine on the day of publication, so they can see the projects chosen by the jury.
Selected photographers must send the requested high-resolution images along with a portrait, a text describing the project, and a short biography. They will also be required to sign a release authorizing the publication of their work, which will be sent by email.
Due to our editing and layout schedule, it is important that all materials are submitted on time in order to meet the publication deadline.
Once all materials have been received, the final layout and cover design will be completed. The publication will be distributed to agencies, galleries, festivals, and professionals around the world. It will also be available through our online store and partner platforms.
Do you have something worth showing? Then make sure it gets here before the countdown hits zero.
Before uploading anything, you need to decide how you want to present your work. Several packages are available, each with a set number of images and different benefits. Some offer more visibility, others give you more room to show your work. There’s no better or worse option, just the one that fits your project and your goals.
Read them carefully and choose the one that truly aligns with what you want to achieve. This isn’t about paying more, it’s about choosing well.
Once you’ve chosen your package, it’s time to confirm your participation. The payment process is simple and secure, with no confusing gateways or unnecessary steps. Just have your card or preferred method ready.
Once you complete this step, you’re officially part of the call. It’s not just a transaction, it’s a decision. And it marks the moment you stop thinking and start moving.
Once you complete the payment, a unique upload link will appear on screen. You’ll also receive it by email so you can keep it on hand.
Check your inbox carefully and, just in case, take a look in your spam or promotions folder. This link gives you access to the upload system. If you can’t find it or run into any issues, feel free to contact us. We’re here to help.
This step is simple but essential. Prepare a folder with your images, named with your first and last name. Don’t include abstract titles or confusing labels. We want everything to arrive clear, organized, and easy to identify. That way we avoid mistakes, mix-ups, or missing files.
The quality of what you send is up to you. The order, too. Do it right from the start, and we’ll take care of the rest.
By participating in the call, you confirm that the images you submit are your own. In other words, the project has been created through your personal work, and you are in a position to present it publicly.
Everything we receive will be evaluated for its content, quality, and vision, always assuming that there is clear and conscious authorship behind it. That’s all we ask: creative honesty and respect for the process. It’s a simple step, but an essential one. If what you’re submitting truly represents you, then you’re already on the right track.
Participating doesn’t mean giving up your rights. No one here is claiming your work. But in order to display it, evaluate it, communicate it, and publish it, we need your permission. That’s why, by submitting your project, you authorize Dodho to use your images solely and exclusively within the context of this call for entries. This includes the selection process, potential publication in the magazine (both print and digital), promotion on social media, press releases, or any action directly related to showcasing your work and the contest itself. And nothing beyond that.
Outside this context, your photos won’t be used without your prior consent. If a third party is interested, we’ll contact you, and the decision will be entirely yours. This license is free, non-exclusive, and limited to the scope of the contest. The authorship remains entirely yours at all times. Things here are done clearly, or not done at all.
Your work is yours. It was before you submitted it, it is while we evaluate it, and it will still be afterwards. Dodho does not acquire any rights to your work by virtue of your participation. We don’t ask for exclusivity, we don’t claim ownership, and we don’t use your images commercially beyond what’s agreed.
Every time your image appears, on the website, in the magazine, on social platforms, it will always include your name. Because we respect your work, and more importantly, we understand what it means to put a piece of yourself out into the world. We don’t publish to fill pages. We publish to give visibility. And that visibility has a name: yours. The credit is yours. The ownership too.
Selected images may be used by Dodho to promote the call for entries and to showcase the work of their authors, always within the boundaries outlined in this call. That includes publication in the online edition of the magazine, on our social media platforms, in press communications, and through partner channels. Always with proper credit.
We do not sell images, we do not transfer them to third parties without the express consent of the author, and we do not use them for any commercial purposes outside the scope of this contest. If someone outside Dodho wishes to use your image, we’ll let you know directly. You’ll receive the request, and you decide what to do.
In short: images are only used to give the author visibility within the framework of this call. That’s it. Anything beyond that is up to you. Because what you share is yours, and it always will be.
How do I submit my work?
Pick the package that suits you best (Cover or Portfolio), fill out the online form (it won’t take more than three minutes), pay with your card or PayPal, and as soon as it’s done, you’ll get your personal WeTransfer link and a receipt. That’s it.
How many submissions can I send?
As many as you want. Just remember: one form and one payment per submission. Simple.
Can collectives or duos apply?
Of course. Just have one person fill out the form as the contact. The credit goes to the whole team.
What are the image requirements?
JPG format, RGB mode, and at least 1200 px on the longest side. Rename your files like this: Lastname_Firstname_01.jpg — no secrets, no weird formats.
Can I include an explanatory text or statement?
If you’re submitting to the Magazine category, you can. It’s not mandatory, but including a PDF or DOC inside your upload folder can help put your work in context. Up to you.
Do the images need to be unpublished?
Nope. If they’ve already been published or even won an award, that’s fine, as long as the rights are yours, they’re welcome.
Is there a time restriction for when the images were taken?
None. We’re not here to check dates, the jury cares about what the image says, not when it was shot.
Do I retain the copyright?
Yes. Your work is yours, before, during, and after. You just give us permission to show it (magazine, website, social media), always with your name on it and only to promote you. That’s all.
Can I revoke the license?
Of course. Just send us a written notice with 30 days in advance, unless your work is already printed or about to be. No drama.
What does the jury look for?
Something that doesn’t look like everything else. Something that says something. Well executed. And aligned with the kind of photography we stand for. If your work ticks those boxes, it gets on the table. If not, it doesn’t.
When will I know if I’ve been selected?
One week after the deadline. You’ll get an email. If you don’t see it, check your spam before writing. We won’t ghost you, relax.
Will I hear anything if I’m not selected?
Yes. You’ll get a “not this time” and, a couple of weeks later, the digital magazine. Go through it slowly. The answers you’re looking for are in there.
What do I get if I’m published?
More than a pat on the back, real visibility. Your work is sent to galleries, festivals, and agencies worldwide. This isn’t about showing off, it’s about positioning.
Can I use the publication in my portfolio or website?
Of course. And you should. It adds weight where it matters, contests, grants, exhibitions, and more.
Is there promotion after publication?
Yes. We don’t let go after printing. We keep sharing your work, mentioning you, and connecting you with the right people.
Will I get interviews or features?
If your work calls for it, yes. We select certain photographers for interviews and in-depth articles.
Does the magazine reach the right people?
The ones that matter. Galleries, curators, festival directors, and industry media. We don’t shoot in the dark.
Is there promotion after publication?
Yes. We don’t let go after printing. We keep sharing your work, mentioning you, and connecting you with the right people.
How do I pay?
However you prefer. We accept PayPal, credit or debit cards, and even bank transfers if you’re more old-school. We keep it simple. All methods are fast and secure, so you can focus on what really matters. The only tricky part here should be choosing your best shots.
Do you issue invoices?
Yes. As soon as you pay, you’ll get a receipt. Need an invoice with your billing details? Send them over and you’ll have it in your inbox within 48 hours.
Are taxes included in the price?
Yes. What you see is what you pay. If you’re in Europe and VAT applies, it’ll be added automatically based on your country. No surprises.
Can I get a refund?
Only if you paid twice or there was a technical error and you let us know within 48 hours. Once we’ve opened your file, there’s no turning back.
How do I know if you received my files?
First, you’ll get an automatic email confirming the form was submitted. Then, one from WeTransfer when you upload (and we download) your images. And once we’ve reviewed everything, you’ll hear from us directly. If there’s any issue, we’ll let you know within 48 hours. No one gets left on read here.
What do you do with my data? Is it going to be floating around forever?
Not at all. It’s stored on secure servers in the EU, with encryption and restricted access. It’s never shared, never sold, and it’s automatically deleted 24 months after the call ends. We only keep it longer if legally required. That’s it.
