Decibel (dB) : A unit that indicates the ratio of a physical quantity (usually power or intensity) relative to a specified or implied reference level, generally assumed to be a sound unit.

In this literature, 0 dB is defined as the human threshold of hearing. “0 dB” fundamentally investigates the intensity of unmanned spaces. Being the minimum value for hearing for humans, in fact; “0dB”expresses the limit of human perception. So, the sounds and vibrations at “0dB” echoes in lonely places that I pursue. Following a narrative sequence in my photographs, I search for the equivalent of the “0dB” supports its narrative with a photography book which includes texts written by writer Hakan Bıçakcı.

This book is the last stage of a project that I’ve been working on for more than four or five years. As can be understood by the name of the book, this can be considered the nonexistence of voice, the nonexistence of a witness. All the photographs are images of the city that we wander in. They recall a mode of wandering semi-consciously. There is the state of nonexistence where no one exists. As Hakan Bıçakcı says, ‘When there is no one around, the possibility of having a person around is terrifying.

0 dB is a situation related with human limitation which means the boundaries. These boundaries are surrounded with words and experiences. People are unable to dream the unseen, unable to listen to the unheard. Therefore, we just need to push our minds to dream of what the words and voices behind the boundaries are saying. We call ”0” for our lowest level of hearing. We define the bottom line regarding our boundaries skipping the unheard sounds that surround us, being unaware of the sounds of ideas and memories. [Official Website]

I don’t discern photography from other artistic means of expression; for me, they are primarily a tool for self-expression. As in painting, sculpture or literature, you express your idea first to yourself. You can never know whether the entire story that you tell or the emotions that you convey in your work will reach anyone or not. So I tell my story to myself in the first place. The story is composed of certain concepts and emotions. When I look at my own photographs, I know that there are things that are not visible there, and yes, that is actually my concern.
