In Latin, grana signifies the seed, the grain, the microscopic core from which all life originates.
My series GRANA is a visual meditation on nature’s most enduring architecture—dried seed pods, rugged cones, thorny thistles, and weathered acorns.
Stripped of colour and removed from their natural surroundings, these botanical forms are not presented as remnants of decay, but as remarkable vessels of endurance, designed to protect, store, and carry life through harsh, unyielding conditions.
By isolating each specimen against a quiet, minimalist backdrop, the focus shifts to its pure sculptural geometry. The camera honours the armour-like scales of a pine cone, the fibrous weave of a husk, and the defensive spikes of a seed pod. These humble, often overlooked natural artefacts are elevated into monumental forms, serving as a powerful metaphor for human resilience—a testament to the capacity to withstand adversity, preserve inner strength, and endure until the time comes to thrive again.
This thematic spirit of permanence is directly tied to the tactile qualities of the handcrafted platinum/palladium print. By hand-coating noble metal salts directly onto fine 100% cotton rag paper, the image is absorbed deep into the paper fibres, creating a velvety, non-reflective matte finish with a remarkably broad tonal range.
Because platinum is one of the most chemically stable elements on Earth and is resistant to fading over centuries, printing these seeds—nature’s ultimate vessels of future survival—in an archival medium creates a quiet harmony between the endurance of the subject and the physical permanence of the print itself.
About Yelena Zhavoronkova
Based in San Francisco, Yelena Zhavoronkova is a fine art photographer and graphic designer. She holds a Master’s degree in Industrial Design from the St. Petersburg Stieglitz State Academy of Art and Design in Russia and brings more than forty years of design expertise to her creative practice. For the past fifteen years, she has focused intensively on photography as the primary vehicle for her artistic vision, creating projects that are both personal and universal and that engage viewers on an intimate and familiar level.
Since 2010, her photography has been exhibited at prestigious institutions including the de Young Museum and San Francisco City Hall, the Center for Photographic Art in Carmel, and Blue Sky Gallery in Oregon. Internationally, her work has been shown at the Anzenberger Gallery in Vienna and across Japan and Europe, including the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, and Finland.
Her imagery has been published in The New Yorker, Black & White Magazine, All About Photo, and Analog Forever, and has been featured in Shutterbug and the Transformation literary journal. Notably, her book Memories in Red is held in the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library at Yale University as part of the Indie Photobook Library Collection.
Specializing in archival digital printing, silver gelatin, platinum/palladium, and copperplate photogravure, her prints are held in numerous private and institutional collections across the United States and Europe.
