AWARDS

AN INTERNATIONAL CALL EXPLORING PORTRAITURE, IDENTITY AND THE GAZE

The Portrait Awards return in 2026 for their fourth edition, reaffirming a commitment to portrait photography as a space of presence, responsibility, and authorship. In a visual landscape saturated with immediacy and repetition, this call insists on the portrait as a deliberate act, one that requires time, attention, and a clear position from the photographer.

Portraiture, in this context, is not treated as a stylistic category or a formal exercise. It is understood as a relationship. A negotiation between the photographer and the subject, between visibility and intimacy, between intention and consequence. The Portrait Awards 2026 seek works that embrace this complexity and resist simplification, projects that understand the portrait not as representation but as encounter. This fourth edition is open to photographers of all backgrounds, disciplines, and levels of experience. Selection is not based on career trajectory or recognition, but on the strength, coherence, and clarity of the work itself.
We are interested in projects that sustain a voice over time, that build meaning through proximity, continuity, and commitment to the subject. Portraits that exist beyond the moment of capture and remain anchored in context. The selected works will be reviewed by an international jury composed of professionals from photography, publishing, and curatorial fields. Finalist projects will be presented within Dodho Magazine’s editorial and curatorial framework, reinforcing the role of the Portrait Awards as more than a competition: a platform for visibility grounded in discourse, care, and long-term relevance.

The Portrait Awards operate as part of a broader editorial ecosystem, one that values continuity over immediacy and reflection over spectacle. To take part in this call is to enter an ongoing conversation about what it means to portray another person today, and from which ethical, emotional, and visual position that act is performed.

CONTEXT

THE ANNUAL BOOK AS EDITORIAL CONTEXT

The annual book of Dodho Magazine does not function as a simple catalogue. It is a permanent editorial publication that brings together a curated selection of authors and projects, continuing to circulate well beyond the moment of the competition.

The works included become part of a printed edition conceived to endure over time, consulted and used within professional contexts related to contemporary photography. This is not about immediate visibility, but about sustained presence.

Being included in the annual book means that your work is placed within a stable editorial framework, where it can be read, revisited, and understood in relation to other authors within the same edition.

JURY

AN EXPERT INTERNATIONAL JURY

The jury for the upcoming call is composed of professionals working at the forefront of contemporary photography, with direct insight into artistic practice, curatorship, publishing, and institutional contexts.

Aline Smithson, based in Los Angeles, is an interdisciplinary artist, educator, and editor whose work has been widely exhibited internationally and whose long-standing editorial and curatorial activity as the founder of LENSCRATCH has made her a central figure in contemporary photographic discourse.

Burkhard Arnold, founder and director of in focus Gallery, has led one of the longest-running galleries dedicated to classic and contemporary photography since 1989, presenting emerging and established artists through exhibitions, publications, and collaborations with institutions.

Erin Hoyt, Executive Director of Filter Photo in Chicago, combines her role as an arts administrator with extensive experience in exhibition programming, portfolio reviews, and professional development initiatives for fine art and documentary photographers.

Completing the jury is Roger Ballen, one of the most influential figures in contemporary photography. Known for his psychologically charged black and white work, his decades-long practice has redefined the boundaries between documentary photography, art, and the subconscious.

2025 ANNUAL BOOK

THE LATEST PRINTED VOLUME

The annual book is not a showcase or a one-off outcome. It is the place where photographs find continuity, where they stop circulating on their own and become part of an edition conceived to endure over time. The images included are placed within an editorial framework that supports and connects them, allowing the work to settle, enter into dialogue, and remain present beyond the moment it was selected.

SUBMISSION

A SIMPLE PROCESS

The submission process begins by selecting the image pack you wish to enter. The Portrait Awards offer three options only: 3, 6, or 12 images, depending on the scope of the work you want to submit. Once the pack is selected, the entire process is completed through a single registration.

Within the same form, you will enter your personal details, upload the images, and complete the payment, with no additional steps or external procedures. All material must be submitted in one single compressed folder (.zip), properly organized and identified with the author’s first and last name. The folder must include the images and, if the author considers it necessary, a brief descriptive text. Fragmented submissions or individual files will not be accepted. The use of a single compressed file ensures a clear, efficient, and streamlined process.

Step 1: Choose your package

Step 2: Enter your details

FAQ

WE COVER 95% OF THE QUESTIONS THAT MAKE PEOPLE HESITATE

Deadlines, formats, rights, payments, delivery, and publication details are explained below to help you submit with confidence. Please review this section carefully before submitting. If your question falls within the remaining 5%, feel free to contact us directly.
+ SUBMISSION
How can I submit my work?
Select the image pack that best fits your submission (3, 6, or 12 images), complete the online form, upload your images within the same form, and finalize the payment by card or PayPal. The entire process is completed in a single registration and only takes a few minutes.

How many submissions can I send?
There is no limit. Each submission must be completed through a separate form and payment.

Can collectives or duos apply?
Yes. One person should complete the form as the main contact. The submission and credits will be attributed to the collective or duo as a whole.
+ FILES
What are the image requirements?
JPG format at 72 dpi and a minimum of 1200 px on the longest side.

Can I include an explanatory text or statement?
The Portrait Awards focus on individual images, not on project statements. Including an explanatory text is not required. The images will be evaluated on their own merits.
If you wish, you may include a brief text within the submission folder, but it is entirely optional and will not influence the evaluation.
+ WORK ELIGIBILITY
Do the images need to be unpublished?
No. If they have already been published or have even received an award, that is not an issue, as long as you hold the rights.

Is there any time restriction on when the images were taken?
No. Dates are not a factor. The jury focuses on what the image communicates, not when it was made.
+ RIGHTS & LICENSING
Do I retain the copyright?
Yes. Your work remains yours before, during, and after the process. You only grant us permission to display it (magazine, website, and other promotional channels), always credited to you and solely for the purpose of promoting your work.

Can I revoke the license?
Yes. You may do so by sending us a written notice at least 15 days in advance, unless the work has already been printed or is in the immediate process of printing.

+ JURY PROCESS
What does the jury look for?
The jury evaluates work with a clear voice, a defined intention, and strong execution, in line with Dodho’s editorial approach. Priority is given to projects that offer a distinctive perspective and a coherent visual and conceptual framework.

When will I know if I’ve been selected?
Results will be communicated approximately one week after the submission deadline. All participants will be notified by email.

Will I hear anything if I’m not selected?
Yes. All participants will be informed of the outcome. In the weeks following the selection, access to the digital edition will be provided, offering context to better understand the editorial criteria behind the final selection.
+ BENEFITS & EXTRAS
What does inclusion in the annual book mean?
Beyond recognition, inclusion in the annual book provides lasting editorial visibility. The publication circulates within professional photography contexts and is consulted by galleries, festivals, institutions, and industry professionals worldwide. This is not about short-term exposure, but about placing your work within a stable editorial framework.

Can I reference the book in my portfolio or website?
Yes, and it is encouraged. Being included in the annual book adds editorial credibility to your portfolio, website, and professional applications, particularly in contexts such as open calls, grants, exhibitions, and residencies.

Is there continued visibility after publication?
Yes. The book is not an endpoint. The works included continue to be referenced, shared, and contextualized through Dodho Magazine’s editorial channels, always with proper credit and care.

Are interviews or editorial features possible?
In selected cases, yes. Some authors included in the annual book may be invited to participate in interviews or extended editorial features, depending on the editorial relevance of the work.

+ PAYMENT & INVOICING
How can I pay?
However you prefer. We accept PayPal and credit or debit cards. All payment methods are fast and secure. We keep the process simple so you can focus on what matters.

Do you issue invoices?
Yes. You will automatically receive a receipt once the payment is completed. If you need an invoice with your billing details, send us the information and you will receive it within 48 hours.

Are taxes included in the price?
Yes. The displayed price is the final price. If you are located in Europe and VAT applies, it will be added automatically based on your country.

Can I request a refund?
Only in cases of duplicate payment or technical error, provided you notify us within 48 hours. Once the submitted file has been opened, refunds are no longer possible.
+ DELIVERY CONFIRMATION
How do I know if you received my files?
Once you submit your files, our system will automatically send you a notification confirming that the material has been successfully received and stored on our server. We then review the submission registry, and if we detect any issue, we will contact you directly to resolve it.

+ DATA & PRIVACY
What do you do with my data? Is it going to be floating around forever?
Not at all. It’s stored on secure servers in the EU, with encryption and restricted access. It’s never shared, never sold, and it’s automatically deleted 24 months after the call ends. We only keep it longer if legally required. That’s it.

+ SUPPORT
