This symbiosis of handcrafted experimentation and thematic exploration culminates impressively in her project Daily Life (2023).
The work, created with liquid photographic emulsion on paper in a 40 Ă— 30 cm format, addresses the often overwhelming tensions of modern existence.
It visualizes the feeling of being torn between obligations, expectations, and personal desires: art and everyday life, work and leisure, family and friends, what must be done and what one wants to do—“this and that, one thing and another… always something, always too much!”
In Daily Life, Schlögl explores the paradoxical phenomenon of contemporary restlessness. On the one hand, a person is in constant internal and external motion, driven by tasks and the persistent pressure of endless choices. On the other hand, this continuous pressure can lead to a paralyzing sense of stagnation—the feeling of being stuck deep down despite all the hectic activity.
The execution of the series highlights the artist’s deliberate and experimental approach. For the project, the motifs were photographed using a pinhole camera, giving the images a characteristic soft blur and atmospheric intensity. Schlögl then exposed the photographs onto paper that had previously been hand-coated with liquid photographic emulsion.
Through this complex analog process, the material surface itself becomes a unique work: the physical traces left by the application of the emulsion merge with the photographic exposure to form a cohesive aesthetic whole.
In this way, Eva Schlögl succeeds in embedding the multilayered sensations of haste, overlap, and inner stillness directly into the medium itself, creating a compelling visual metaphor for modern daily life.
About Eva Schlögl
Eva Schlögl was born in Graz in 1981 and grew up in Upper Austria. Her passion for visual design and photography began in early childhood. Even as a teenager, she regularly worked in the darkroom, manually developing her own photographs. During this formative period, she developed a strong interest in abstraction and visual experimentation that extended beyond traditional and conventional photography.
Schlögl later moved to Vienna to pursue her studies. The city became her primary place of residence, and she has lived and worked there ever since, apart from a few formative periods abroad, including a semester in Rome.
She completed a degree in architecture and subsequently worked in several architectural firms. This academic and professional experience permanently shaped her eye for space, structure, light, and precise composition. Nevertheless, her fascination with free artistic creation never left her. After a brief pause during the most intensive phases of her studies, she returned to photography with renewed focus and a more refined visual approach.
Her work has been presented in numerous exhibitions in Austria and abroad. She has also deepened her artistic practice through various artist-in-residence programs, which have provided her with the time and space to experiment with new techniques, develop site-specific concepts, and evolve her visual language through dialogue with different cultural contexts.
