Lesia Maruschak

Transfiguration revolves around a little girl named Maria - a survivor of the 1932-1933 famine in my homeland of Ukraine. Her parents and 4 million others died because of Stalin’s policy of artificial starvation.

I am a descendant of immigrants who came to Canada from Ukraine in 1897. They were the backbone of the Canadian government’s immigration program aimed at settling Western Canada.

WO·MAN: Place points to a symbolic experience. Maruschak was captivated by the garment’s apparent beauty; yet, its materiality - frayed edges, bleeding dyes, and yellowing fabric – spoke to her of memory making, ritual and place.
