Reflections by Alex Sher

Once upon a time, when wheels were made of stone and phones had no cameras, lived my grandma. I loved my grandma and loved her stories about people and places she remembered. There was one story about a photographer grandma was telling in her photo lab.

Once upon a time, when wheels were made of stone and phones had no cameras, lived my grandma. I loved my grandma and loved her stories about people and places she remembered.

There was one story about a photographer grandma was telling in her photo lab. She never mentioned his name – just a guy who could make any woman beautiful with his camera. I envied him. I wanted to be this guy. I wished my grandma would say that about me some day. He knew some secrets this photographer and he took these secrets with him to his Holocaust grave.

Many years have passed. I’ve travelled around the world, changing jobs and cameras, taking pictures of the most beautiful people and unbelievable things. Through my life journey I hope to hear some day: “He is a magician, he makes life beautiful with his camera”.

“Water is powerful and possessive. It cautiously guards its dark abyss against air and light. Whenever any of the two sneak in, the water mercilessly devours them. Yet, water’s power gives way to its majesty, releasing the elements it once held captive. When a weightless beauty wrapped in shimmering bubbles shines before my lens, the camera takes pictures on its own. I am just holding my breath.”

About Alex Sher

Alex Sher is an award-winning American underwater fine art photographer internationally recognized for his distinctive depictions of the feminine sensuality. Sher was born in Ukraine and moved to United States with his family in 1995. Sher started showing his photographs in early nineties. He was considering himself an emerging artist until one of his pieces was stolen from an exhibition in Kyiv, leading him to the epiphany that his works represented a significant value to the public.

Later in US Sher began experimenting with underwater photography and has evolved from a marine wildlife photographer, to figurative fine art, to monochrome black and white works, and into his latest artistic innovation that weaves together the figurative and the abstract. Sher’s work began to attract extensive interest in 2015. To date, his works has been exhibited in London, Paris, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and other major cities including the Louvre Museum in Paris. His first solo show was held in 2016 at Los Angeles’s Bruce Lurie Gallery. Since his debut, he has had six exclusive exhibitions, has been in numerous group exhibitions, and has participated in prominent art fairs.

In 2018 his first photo book “Mermaids” was published. Sher mastered the profession of underwater coaching. Bringing forth this spiritual blending with the water and his technical and artistic innovations with the camera, he generously shares his techniques with his models and aspiring photographers. Alex pushes the limits of creativity, exploring themes, finding new interpretations, playing with colors, light, emotions, and fantasy. He truly elevates the art form. And of course, his art always raises the bar for my own underwater efforts.
