I have dedicated myself to staging and photographing miniature tableaux for nearly three decades.
I create each piece through a meticulous process in which I combine hand fabrication and storytelling to produce the final work as a photograph.
In my series, Reclaiming the Muse, I reinterpret historic artworks and stories through a queer feminist lens. The miniature is my vehicle for droll social commentary, telling stories of vulnerability, liberation, and defiance. I challenge the patriarchal canon by centering those it has marginalized—women cast as objects of beauty or scorn, and queer and trans people rendered invisible or deviant—and restoring them as autonomous agents.
In Divine Intervention, God Herself pointedly offers Adam a blister pack of condoms. A Modern Family recasts Van Eyck’s Arnolfini Portrait with a pregnant trans man and his wife. I subvert the gender of Ingres’ iconic reclining nude in Le Grand Gigolo, turning the male gaze back on itself. A Man of Parts exposes the voyeuristic canon’s embedded power dynamics in Courbet’s L’Origine du Monde. A contemporary Susanna chases off elderly Peeping Toms with a blast from a garden hose.
To begin each piece, I research the myth, story, or historic painting that inspires my reinterpretation, often revealing the bias inherent in the original work. I am especially interested in countering the male gaze and bigotry so widespread throughout the patriarchal worldview.
Although I never depict actual people in my photographs, the human psyche is at the center of my work. I use dolls and miniature figures as my cast of characters. Historically utilized across cultures as tools for psychological projection, channeling desires, anxieties, and fantasies, I employ these objects as purposeful instruments for art-making. By using materials traditionally coded as feminine, I challenge hierarchies of gender and artistic value while exploring mythology, cultural norms, courage, and liberation beneath a playful surface that belies the complexity of the narratives.
As LGBTQ+ and women’s rights face systematic erasure from policy and public life in the United States, I make this work as a form of visual resistance. As a queer feminist, I reclaim the narratives, materials, and agency that have been devalued or denied, asserting the urgency of our visibility, presence, and standing within contemporary art and culture.
About Grace Weston
Grace Weston is a Portland, Oregon-based artist specializing in narrative staged photography featuring meticulously crafted miniature tableaux.
Most recently, Weston was included in Candela Gallery’s Unbound 15! juried exhibition (2026). She was selected as a Top 25 artist in the Dodho Fine Art Photography Awards 2025, resulting in publication in the accompanying hardcover book. In January 2026, Dodho featured her suburban noir series The Long Night. Her work has appeared in both print and online professional photography publications in multiple languages.
Weston’s work has been presented in exhibitions throughout the United States and internationally, including in Paris, Madrid, Tokyo, Stockholm, Bath (UK), Naples, Florence, Brescia and Rimini (Italy), Shanghai, and at an extensive exhibition at the Center for Photography in Yekaterinburg, Russia (2021). In 2012, she held her first European solo exhibition at Paci Contemporary in Brescia, Italy. She also has upcoming exhibitions scheduled for 2027 at the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson, Arizona, and Blue Sky Gallery in Portland, Oregon.
Her awards include First Place in All About Photo Magazine (2025), two-time Top 50 recognition in Photolucida’s Critical Mass (2011, 2023), the Women United Art Prize (2022), First Place and Gold at the Tokyo International Foto Awards (2021), and the Passepartout Art Prize (2021), among others.
In 2020, Peanut Press published a limited-edition monograph of Weston’s work entitled The Neighbors Will Talk. Her work is held in museum and public collections throughout the Pacific Northwest.
