The exhibition GENESIS. Photographs by Sebastião Salgado will be open from 18h of February to 17th of March, 2016
Genesis isĀ aĀ photographic journey into the planetĀ ā anĀ expedition toĀ rediscover the mountains, deserts and oceans, the animals and peoples that have soĀ far escaped the imprint ofĀ modern society. The land and life ofĀ aĀ still pristine planet. Yet Genesis isĀ also aĀ project that speaks urgently toĀ our own age. ByĀ portraying the breathtaking beauty ofĀ aĀ Ā«lostĀ» world that somehow survives, itĀ proclaims: this isĀ what isĀ inĀ peril, this isĀ what weĀ must save.
Genesis isĀ SebastiĆ£o Salgadoās third long-term exploration ofĀ global issues, following Workers and Migrations, his examinations ofĀ the human toll wrought byĀ radical economic and social change. This time, heĀ isĀ addressing our natural environment inĀ offering aĀ love poem inĀ images toĀ the majesty and fragility ofĀ our planet.
Working asĀ always inĀ black-and-white, Salgado has built his dossier during more than 30Ā different trips toĀ distant corners ofĀ the globe. Each sortie from his base inĀ Paris took several weeks and involved light aircraft, helicopters, seagoing vessels and canoes asĀ well asĀ long hikes through very difficult terrain inĀ extremes ofĀ heat and cold. Having begun these voyages inĀ 2004, Salgado has completed Genesis atĀ the end ofĀ 2011.

InĀ considering how toĀ present Genesis, weĀ initially opted for aĀ thematic approach highlighting the earthās geophysical origins, its animals, primitive peoples and early societies. But the very remoteness ofĀ regions visited byĀ Salgado meant that they often contributed images toĀ several themes. WeĀ have therefore decided toĀ organize the photographs into broadly-defined eco-systems which, weĀ believe, best mirror how nature works. Our aim isĀ toĀ open the eyes ofĀ the public toĀ the marvels toĀ beĀ found onĀ earth, not only those that weĀ have had the privilege ofĀ finding and recording for Genesis, but also those inĀ the lakes and hills and the parks and gardens that are within easy reach ofĀ our homes and represent our most frequent contact with Nature. After all, itĀ isĀ inĀ our daily lives that the battle for conservation begins. For this very reason, our hope isĀ that those who come toĀ view and debate Genesis will doĀ so, not simply asĀ interested observers but asĀ active stakeholders inĀ aĀ universal heritage that isĀ crying out for our care and attention.
