Fondazione Artea presents Helmut Newton. Intrecci, a major exhibition dedicated to one of the most influential and controversial photographers of the twentieth century.

On view at the historic Il Filatoio di Caraglio, the exhibition brings together over 100 photographs, including iconic works and lesser-known images, offering a wide-ranging exploration of Helmut Newton’s visual universe.

Curated by Matthias Harder, Director of the Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin, Intrecci unfolds as a layered journey through Newton’s career, highlighting the complex intersections between fashion, portraiture, advertising, and visual provocation. The title, meaning “Interweavings,” refers both to the site itself — a seventeenth-century silk mill — and to the conceptual threads that run through Newton’s work: desire, power, irony, theatricality, and the construction of image.

The exhibition places particular emphasis on Newton’s long-standing collaborations with leading fashion houses and international brands, including Yves Saint Laurent, Wolford, Blumarine, Absolut Vodka, Lavazza, and Ca’ del Bosco, as well as his work with some of the most recognizable figures in fashion and culture, among them Catherine Deneuve, Andy Warhol, Paloma Picasso, Monica Bellucci, Kate Moss, Carla Bruni, and Eva Herzigová.

Rather than presenting a purely chronological overview, Helmut Newton. Intrecci reveals how editorial photography, commissioned work, and personal vision merge into a single, unmistakable language. Newton’s images consistently challenge conventions, transforming fashion photography into a space of tension, ambiguity, and visual authority.

Conceived specifically for Il Filatoio di Caraglio, the exhibition is accompanied by a public program of talks and events that will further explore Newton’s legacy and the relevance of his work within contemporary debates on image-making, authorship, and visual culture.

The exhibition is presented in dialogue with Ferdinando Scianna. Fashion, Life, held simultaneously at La Castiglia in Saluzzo, offering a complementary perspective on the relationship between fashion photography and lived experience.
