The global pandemic of COVID-19 has been a turning point in our lives. We have had time to reflect and value what is really important to us, to flee from the superfluous and to search for the essence of our “day to day”.

This is how this project came about, “From the figurative to the abstract”, a series of photographs that develops in two stages, confinement and post-confinement, and which attempts to capture how these events changed my way of perceiving reality.

In the first stage, during the confinement, I had the opportunity to photograph my city from another perspective. Empty cities, without people, without circulation? The architecture no longer interacted with man, it was now exposed in its pure state.

Two main techniques were used in this series: “minimalism” and “black and white”. Minimalism allows us to reduce a scene to its minimum expression (lines, patterns, contrasts…), to focus on the essential, to eliminate the superfluous, and to endow it with symbolism. And “black and white”, with a high contrast, which allows us to generate a greater visual impact on the viewer, enveloping them in a unique atmosphere.

In the second stage, once the confinement is over, we gradually enter a new “normality”. It is now, when the interaction between the human figure (silhouettes) and the architectural spaces acquired a new dimension: a new existentialist symbolism that tries to capture the essence and values of the human being (solitude, tolerance, resilience…).

About Peter Zarkob

Born in Spain, Peter Zarkob has a degree in Information Sciences from the Advertising department of University of Seville. From the beginning, Zarkob specialized in the creation of logos and corporate identity manuals, embodying the philosophy and personality of his clients in simple and geometric designs.

This journey towards minimalism enabled him to apply his experience to advertising campaigns in which he used the same technique: striking images that caught the viewer’s attention in the shortest possible time, while transmitting the personality of the company and the interest in the product.

Now focused on minimalist photography, his work seeks to provoke a strong visual impact on the viewer while transmitting his thoughts and feelings.
