AmericaB&WNudeFigures on Land by Michael Seif

To Seif, the watery figures are alive, fluid, creatures of nature. Not just figures in nature, they are nature. The land-based figures are more formally presented. They are posed compositions of the figure against water, natural or quarried granite, and other backgrounds.

At the same time Michael Seif began to photograph “Figures in Water” in 2003, he began photographing “Figures on Land.”

To Seif, the watery figures are alive, fluid, creatures of nature. Not just figures in nature, they are nature. The land-based figures are more formally presented. They are posed compositions of the figure against water, natural or quarried granite, and other backgrounds. With a few exceptions, these figures could be sculptures – frozen in time. Rather than being one with nature, natures is their setting or background only. To see these comparisons, please view Dodho “Figures in Water” and “Figures on Land.”

About Michael Seif

Although not my profession, for the past 50 years, photography has been my passion. In the mid 1960s, I began photographing the streets of New York City. Since then, I have photographed during my travels through most European countries, India, and throughout the United States. My most recent projects have been photographing the human figure abstracted by water, and photographing wildlife and other images in nature. I’ve learned photography over the years, in lectures, workshops, critiques, and by studying photographs themselves. I have taken classes at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the New School in NYC and have attended lectures and workshops with Larry Fink, Lisette Model, Dianne Arbus, Ernst Haas, and many others. My work has been shown in more than 40 juried group shows throughout the US, and in close to a dozen solo or featured-artist shows. I always cringe whenever I’m required to come up with a landscape photo for a photo contest or magazine submission. Sure, there are some phenomenal landscape photos out there, but in my opinion, landscape photography is simply a matter of being in a certain place and knowing how to use your camera.
